Chemovator GmbH

Chemovator is the business incubator of BASF – available for all BASF-employees with innovative ideas around chemistry. Complementary to the existing innovation landscape of BASF, Chemovator offers a protected space to test new business ideas, products and innovative services and turn them into investable and scalable business models. The wholly-owned subsidiary of BASF New Business GmbH is located in Mannheim. Here, Chemovator offers an unconventional startup environment with plenty of space for creativity. From early validation to successful commercialization, all Venture Teams receive support from experienced entrepreneurs and investors, who have built startups and new businesses from scratch. Their support ranks from coaching over mentoring to providing extended network opportunities.

What is Chemovator?

Chemovator is the internal business incubator for all BASF-employees! Chemovator is your protected space to turn bold ideas around chemistry into thriving businesses.

Who can take on the Chemovator Journey?

All BASF-employees with a business idea which cannot be implemented in BASF/find a home in BASF, get the chance to turn their business idea into an investable and scalable business model in Chemovator.

What are the criteria to enter Chemovator?

Important admission criteria are:

Personal and professional fit of team and idea to Chemovator, degree of how Chemovator can actually help the potential Venture Team, validity of BASF contract, reference to chemistry and BASF, team constellation, market, customer need, technical maturity of idea, and availability of financing/financing requirements.

What is the Chemovator Journey?

The Chemovator Journey describes the process steps of Chemovator from ideation to exit.

The main phases are: Validation Phase to develop business hypothesis to be tested in the Incubation Phase. The goal of the Incubation Phase is to test all relevant business hypothesis to create a scalable business model & exit (spin-in or spin-off). The Chemovator Journey can take up to 21 months.

Who works in Chemovator?

The Chemovator Team consists of three sub-groups working in Chemovator:

  • Chemovator Core Team: runs and develops Chemovator
  • Entrepreneurs in Residence: support the Venture Teams through networks, coaching and mentoring, but they also jointly develop the Chemovator concept together with the Chemovator Core Team
  • Venture Teams: as soon as a BASF team gets submitted to Chemovator, it turns into a Venture Team and gets an official working space in Chemovator to work on the business idea
